**** NEW Ph.D. Degree Program in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, USA), Applications are now accepted! *** The Computational and Theoretical Chemistry group (CATCO) at SMU, an urban private university located in the vibrant city of Dallas, TX, has several openings for the new Ph.D. Degree Program in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (TCC). For further information, see CATCO or contact ekraka [at] smu.edu SMU is the first university offering a TCC degree, which is based on a 4-year curriculum (66 units) including individual mentoring and modern research. Course topics include • Basic and advanced Theoretical and Computational Chemistry • Molecular Modeling and Computer Assisted Drug Design • Training in QM/MM methods • Linear Algebra, Symmetry, and Group Theory • Elementary and advanced Hartree-Fock Theory • Density Functional Theory • Electron Correlation Methods • Calculation of Molecular Properties • Models and Concepts in Chemistry • Statistical Thermodynamics • Writing and Communication Skills Important benefits for the graduate students • Students will receive a PhD degree in Theoretical/Computational Chemistry. • Students will be exposed to a unique tailor-made educational program with discipline-specific curriculum and state-of art, discipline-specific courses. • They will participate in a vivid research program stretching from software development and coding to applications in environmental chemistry, investigation of non-covalent interactions, computer assisted drug design or simulation of homogenous and enzyme catalysis. • Students will acquire all necessary skills for a successful career in academia or industry. These include mastering computational tools to carry out world-class research in a high-performance computer environment, communicating research outcomes in oral presentation and scholarly publication. • Students are individually mentored; they will receive continuous feedback on their progress in the program. • Students are expected to defend their thesis after 4 years with at least 5 publications in peer-refereed journals. Financial support: Each Ph.D. student receives a comprehensive annual financial package (stipend: $25,000 and a full tuition waiver: $40,000) as well as substantial health insurance support and travel allowance to national conferences. Note that at many other universities students have to pay the tuition! (Please note that in other univeristies, the stipend might be higher. But the students may need to pay $7,000 to $9,000 tuition, which make their stipend level practically lower than SMU.) Excellent computer resources: SMU’s new High Performance Computer (HPC) Center is the largest among all private universities of the size of SMU providing outstanding computational facilities. Prerequisites: Prospective Ph.D. candidates should have completed their undergraduate studies with a major in chemistry, physics or chemical engineering and, ideally, have already some basic computational skills. This is a direct (fast-track) bachelors-to-Ph.D. program. They should demonstrate good judgment, independency at work, clear sense of purpose, and accountability. Proficiency skills in English (written and oral) are mandatory certified by TOEFL for non-native English speakers. In addition, successful completion of the GRE is required.
