The investigation of an AZT ceramic in comparison with a pure alumina ceramic by means of wedge splitting tests with in-situ crack growth observation was the topic of previous work in cooperation with “Forschungszentrum Juelich”, Germany.7 Growth and opening displacement of the main crack was accompanied in the AZT ceramic by pronounced microcracking, branching and bridging processes. The thermal shock parameter R’’’’, which is a measure of the resistance against crack propagation under thermal shock loading8, was determined. The values predicted a higher thermal shock resistance of the AZT ceramic compared with pure Al2O3.7 |
