復數(shù) what 1 and 2 mean respectively.

如果你把1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10看做是10個東西，就用復數(shù)。
如果你把1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10看做1個東西，就用單數(shù)。
關鍵是你認為那是一個東西還是多個東西。

關鍵不是 "你認為", 是 "公認為"
球隊, 陪審團... 被公認為單數(shù), 即所謂  "collective nouns"

否則即使筆者強調是復數(shù):
  Neon, argon and xenon are noble gases...
讀者總想是復數(shù)
  ... THAT do not react  <- 不要用 WHICH

如欲避免混淆, 不如寫兩句
  1,2... and 10  ARE __'s  <-  __'s 表示復數(shù)
  Each __ REPRESENTS  <- "represent" = "代表", 不要用 "mean" = "內含(特殊)意義"

看主語代表什么，代表數(shù)字則單數(shù)，代表個體，則復數(shù)。

寫漏了, 舉個更易懂的例子
  套裝___ = ___ set

Each _X_ set contains _數(shù)量_ ___'s: a  _"1"_, a _"2"_..., and a _"10"_
  each representing a ...., all __ 形容 ... 的共同特征 __
        或
  each of WHICH represents ...., ALL ...

這里  WHICH = {1,2,...10}數(shù)學集合, 并不一定就是 X (單數(shù))
     each 是單數(shù), represent 動詞后加 s
     each of which 是一個一個挑
     some of which (1,3,7) represent..., while others (2/4 and 5/9) represent __ and __, respectively 是小組小組挑

清楚起見, 可寫
  Each _X_ set contains _數(shù)量_ ___'s:
    "1" and "3" (_數(shù)量_ each) represent ....    <-- 新行開頭可大寫
    "2" and "4" (_數(shù)量_ each) represent ....

清楚最重要, 不要省行
