Photomagnetic compounds based on [M(CN)8]4- building blocks M = Mo(IV) and W(IV)
The photoswitchable molecular compounds are an interesting class of materials because they can be used in data storage devices or sensors. In general, these systems have two (or more) distinct electronic states that can be addressed by temperature, visible light, pressure, electric field... When the two states have different magnetic behaviors, the systems are called photomagnetic compounds. Some of these photomagnetic systems are based on [M(CN)8]4- complexes linked to 3d metal ions and show an exceptional stability on their photo-induced states. Nevertheless, the electronic phenomenon at the origin of the photomagnetism in these systems is still a debate. Some studies affirm that an metal-metal electron transfer occurs between the [M(CN)8]4-and its 3d ionic neighbours,[1] and others propose a spin crossover in the [M(CN)8]4- unit.[2,3]
The proposed phD work consists of elucidating the mechanism responsible for the switching process in the [M(CN)8]4-/3d systems. The phD student will synthetize known and new compounds to have a large family of systems necessary for comparison and understanding of the photomagnetic properties. Then he(she) will study the photo-induced properties using different techniques: X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic measurements (IR, Raman, optical spectroscopy), cyclic voltammetry and magnetism. A special attention will be also devoted to the development of new systems with optimized switching properties. During the phD, measurements on synchrotron beamlines will be planned to perform local spectrocopies XANES and XMCD measurements in collaboration with the group of P. Sainctavit (Univ. Paris VI).
