20世紀40年代以前，人類一直未能掌握一種能高效治療細菌性感染且副作用小的藥物。當時若某人患了肺結(jié)核，那么就意味著此人不久就會離開人世。細菌感染如同絕癥一樣讓人們恐懼，手術(shù)中一旦受到感染就意味著死亡。然而，這一切的改變都是因為世界上第一種抗生素——青霉素的發(fā)明，1928年英國細菌學家弗萊明，由于一次幸運的過失而發(fā)現(xiàn)了青霉素。

However, all this change is because of the invention of the world's first antibiotic penicillin – 1928 United Kingdom bacteriologist Alexander Fleming, penicillin was found due to a lucky mistake.
