In many places structures are placed adjacent to heavily trafficked
navigation channels. The ship traffic is supposed to stay in the main
navigation channel. Some ships, however, do loose their way or their
steering and may ram the structure. One method to protect against the
impact is to surround the structures with works built in fill materials.
