To overcome the shortcomings mentioned above, this paper outlines an approach for formulating and solving the gauge placement problem when the imposed loads being estimated induce vibrations in the structure, resulting in time varying dynamic strains. The accuracy of load estimates is dependent on the placement (location and orientation) of the strain gauges, and the number of strain modes retained in the analysis. A sequential exchange algorithm based approach is used to select the optimum locations, and angular orientations of the strain gauges. Two examples, one dealing with an experimental validation of proposed procedures and the other dealing with a numerical validation of the proposed approach, are presented.
