Larry L. Hench is currently Professor of Ceramic Materials in the Department of Materials, and he is also Co-Director of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Centre at Imperial College. He assumed the Chair of Ceramic Materials at Imperial College in December 1995, following 32 years at the University of Florida where he was Graduate Research Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Director of the Bioglass® Research Center and Co-Director of the Advanced Materials Research Center. He completed B.S. and PhD degrees at the Ohio State University in 1964.

In 1969 Professor Hench discovered Bioglass®, the first man-made material to bond to living tissues. This unique range of soda-calcia-phospho-silica glasses is used clinically throughout the world for repair of bones, joints and teeth. This development, together with the accompanying studies of the mechanisms of glass surface reactions and chemical processing of materials, has led to many international awards, including the MRS Von Hippel Award and publication of nearly 520 research papers, 22 books and 23 patents. Dr. Hench's studies of sol-gel processing of silica has led to the development of a new generation of gel-silica optical components (Gelsil®, including net shape-net surface micro-optics, diffractive optics and porous optical matrices for environmental sensors tissue engineering and solid state dye lasers. These products, now commercially manufactured, have led to numerous advanced technology awards in the optics industry.

Min Wang was awarded BSc in Materials Science and Engineering by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), China, and earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of London, UK. He is a Chartered Scientist (CSci), a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a fellow (FIMMM) of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, and a fellow (FIMechE) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK. Dr.Wang was a founding member of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Biomedical Materials of the University of London and worked on various projects in the IRC between 1991 and 1997. Before joining the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in June 2003, Dr. Wang conducted teaching and research in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) (1997-2002), Singapore, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) (2002-2003), Hong Kong. At Nanyang Technological University, he set up and led the Biomaterials Strategic Research Programme and the Tissue Engineering Laboratory. At the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he helped to set up facilities in the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Laboratories. At the University of Hong Kong, he has played a key role in the administration and development of the interfaculty BEng (MedE) programme and setting up Faculty of Engineering's Medical Engineering Laboratory. In various places, Dr. Wang set up courses in biomaterials and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomedical engineering. Currently, Dr. Wang is also a guest or adjunct professor of Wuhan University of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dong Hua University, and Tianjin University, China. Over the years, Dr. Wang and his co-workers have investigated and developed various biomaterials for medical applications. The materials he and his co-workers have worked on include bioactive calcium phosphates (hydroxyapatite (HA), tricalcium phosphate (TCP), etc.), Bioglass, A-W glass-ceramic (Cerabone A-W), as well as composites (such as hydroxyapatite reinforced polyethylene (HAPEXTM)), coatings and scaffolds containing these bioactive materials. The bioactive composites that he and his colleagues developed have been patented in the US. For developing tissue engineering scaffolds, his group has been using various fabrication techniques including emulsion freezing and freeze-drying, selective laser sintering (SLS), and electrospinning. Dr. Wang has authored/co-authored a large number of technical papers for his research. He has also published a few papers on biomedical engineering education and training. He has given many conference presentations including over fifty invited talks for his research work. He has provided consultancy on biomaterials and biomedical engineering to multinational companies based in the UK, USA and Hong Kong. Since 1990, Dr. Wang has served as a reviewer for over forty international scholarly journals and also various national research councils. Dr. Wang has been active in organising international biomaterials conferences including the 7th World Biomaterials Congress (Sydney, 2004) and the 8th World Biomaterials Congress (Amsterdam, 2008) as well as serving in committees of over twenty-five international conferences. Dr. Wang also actively participates in professional societies' activities and has servered in these societies. Dr. Wang's current research interests include biomedical materials, biological materials, and tissue engineering. Dr. Wang lectures on materials science and engineering, biomaterials and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomedical engineering in courses for undergraduates, graduates and clinicians. To promote the engineering profession in general and both materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering in particular, Dr. Wang also goes to local schools to give talks of various topics to high school students. 魯雄,男,1977年5月出生。博士(2004,香港科技大學),副教授。1999年7月畢業(yè)于重慶大學材料科學與工程學院,獲工學學士學位。1999年8月獲教育部公派香港科技大學機械工程系攻讀碩士學位。2001年8月畢業(yè)獲碩士學位。同年9月于香港科技大學機械工程系攻讀博士學位,2004年8月畢業(yè)獲哲學博士學位。2004年9月至2005年8月為香港科技大學機械工程系博士后研究員。2005年9月到西南交通大學材料科學與工程學院工作。參加工作以來在國內(nèi)外學術刊物會議論文集上共發(fā)表三大檢索收錄論文二十余篇。本人作為第一作者發(fā)表SCI論文十余篇。申請專利三項。

Professor Aldo R. Boccaccini holds an MSc (Nuclear Engineering) from Instituto Balseiro (Argentina), PhD (Dr-Ing.) from Aachen University of Technology (Germany) and Habilitation from Ilmenau University of Technology (Germany). Before joining Imperial College in 2000, he had appointments at the University of Birmingham (UK), the University of California at San Diego (USA) and the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. The research activities of Prof. Boccaccini are in the broad area of glasses, ceramics and polymer/glass composites for biomedical, functional, and/or structural applications. He is the author or co-author of more than 350 scientific papers and several book chapters.
Prof. Boccaccini has pioneered the use of electrophoretic deposition for production of nanostructured materials and composites, including carbon nanotube containing composites. In the last few years he has developed extensive research activities in the area of scaffold materials for tissue engineering applications and has pioneered the development of novel highly porous bioactive and degradable composite scaffolds with nanostructured surface topography. The addition of a bioactive component, for example tailored compositions of bioactive glasses, is seen as a significant improvement towards clinical applications (third-generation biomaterials) due to the possibility of tuning the degradation rate, mechanical properties and biological response of the scaffold.
His recent achievements in the area of materials science have been recognized with the award of the Materials Science and Technology Prize 2003 by the Federation of European Materials Society (FEMS) and the Verulam Medal and Prize 2003 of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3). He has been elected Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining of the UK. In addition to his research and teaching activities, Prof. Boccaccini is editorial board member of ten international scientific journals and he was the Chair of the London Materials Society (2005-2006). Recently, Prof. Boccaccini has been named an Ambassador of Imperial College London and was the Chairman of the 3rd International Conference on Electrophoretic Deposition, held in Japan, in October 2008.
Prof. Boccaccini is a member of the organising committee of the 17th International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM-17), 27-31 July 2009 Edinburgh, UK and he is one of the co-chairs of the next EUROMAT 2009 conference, 7-10 September 2009, Glasgow, UK

Research Interest:
Research in regenerative medicine within her group includes the directed differentiation of stem cells, the design of novel bioactive scaffolds and new approaches towards tissue regeneration. She has developed novel approaches to tissue engineering that are likely to prove very powerful in the engineering of large quantities of human mature bone for autologous transplantation as well as other vital organs such as liver and pancreas, which have proven elusive with other approaches. This has led to moves to commercialise the technology and set-up a clinical trial for bone regeneration in humans. 蘇州大學生物醫(yī)用高分子材料重點實驗室(Soochow University BioMedical Polymers Laboratory)籌建于2007年4月,并于2007年12月正式批準成立。實驗室的建設工作得到了學校及化學化工學院的關心和大力支持。實驗室現(xiàn)有4名工作人員、3名國外兼職教授、3名博士生、和17名碩士生。另有共近10名三、四年級本科生在做大學生創(chuàng)新項目或畢業(yè)論文。學校計劃將從國內(nèi)外陸續(xù)引進多位在高分子化學和生物材料領域有一定造詣的優(yōu)秀青年學者,在短時間內(nèi)形成一支結構合理,富有活力、創(chuàng)造力和競爭力的高水平研究團隊。實驗室以獲取原創(chuàng)性成果和產(chǎn)業(yè)化為目標,在生物可降解高分子材料、智能型藥物釋放系統(tǒng)、仿病毒高分子基因載體、生物組織工程支架材料、納米生物材料(如聚合物囊泡和膠束等)、及腫瘤的診斷和靶向治療等國際前沿領域開展創(chuàng)新性研究和開發(fā)工作。實驗室將積極與本校相關單位(如附屬醫(yī)院、醫(yī)學院、藥學院、生命科學學院等)及國內(nèi)外制藥和生物制品公司共同開展合作研究。實驗室已與國內(nèi)外許多著名研究小組(如荷蘭Utrecht大學的Wim E. Hennink教授,荷蘭Twente大學的Jan Feijen教授,韓國KAIST的Tae-Gwan Park教授, 韓國Hanyang大學的Yong-Hee Kim教授等)建立了密切的合作和交流,將通過采用聯(lián)合培養(yǎng)研究生的模式,培養(yǎng)生物醫(yī)用高分子材料方面高尖端技術人才。實驗室現(xiàn)承擔三項國家自然科學基金項目和一項江蘇省高校自然科學基礎研究項目。

The overall goal of our research is to regenerate functional and safe human tissues by combining the principles of biomaterial science, biological science, stem cell biology, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine with the advanced techniques of molecular and cell biology.

Dr. Wen has very broad research interests in many areas of Bioengineering. Many lines of research in biomaterials, tissue engineering, stem cell and regenerative medicine have been established. His group with strong emphasis on translational bioengineering research is focused on biomedical devices (e.g., nerve guidance devices, "living" cochlear implants, intraocular delivery devices, etc), new biomaterial development (such as synthesizing bioactive, biodegradable, and highly elastic synthetic polymers or hydrogels; modifying natural polymers for improved properties; light curable biomaterials; etc), nanostructured biomaterials (nano-ceramics, nano-degradable drug carriers, nano-paramagnetic materials, etc.), tissue engineering scaffold design and fabrication (such as laser microfabrication, photolithography-based microfabrication, phase inversion, electrospinning, and biomimetic approaches), dynamic bioreactor design and development (such as computer-controlled dynamic cell-air interfacing respiratory bioreactor, dynamic compression bioreactor, dynamic tension bioreactor, dynamic fluid or air shearing bioreactor, etc.), in vitro and in vivo tissue engineering (such as neural tissue engineering for the treatment of Spinal Cord Injury and Neurodegenerative Diseases), human long bone tissue engineering based on highly aligned scaffolds and stem cells, cartilage tissue engineering based on strong elastic gels and stem cells, heart patch tissue engineering, etc.), animal models for translational research (several animal models are available in our lab, such as spinal cord injury model, Parkinson's disease model, heart infarction model, cartilage defect model, long bone defect model, deafness model, optical nerve crush model, etc.), stem cell biology (we are studying many different sources of stem cells, such as human embryonic stem cells, human umbilical cord blood or bone marrow stem cells, human adipose tissue derived stem cells, etc. for tissue regeneration), drug delivery (Four types of drug delivery system, including selective-permeable hollow fiber membrane, liposome, microsphere, nano-gel/nano-particle, and combined system are used to deliver drugs, growth factors, genes, and cells to several different types of tissues), genetic engineering (permanent or temporally modifying cells or tissues with special functions), and proteomics (such as using proteomics approach to understand the behavior of cells and tissues under aging, microgravity and other conditions).

Research Highlight:
Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering

Stem cells have tremendous potential for cell therapies and tissue engineering. To maximize the therapeutic potential of stem cells, we explore ways to expand stem cells and to direct stem cell differentiation into specific cell types. We also develop biomaterials to facilitate stem cell delivery and use stem cells to construct functional tissues (e.g. blood vessels) for regenerative medicine applications.

Micro/Nanotechnology

In order to manipulate and control cell functions, tissue morphogenesis and tissue remodeling, we utilize micro/nanotechnologies to fabricate synthetic matrices and to engineer the pattern, topography, structure, and organization of these matrices. These biomimetic scaffolds with micro/nano features and bioactive factors are used for tissue engineering and other biological applications.

Mechanobiology/Mechanotransduction

Mechanical factors play an important role in development and tissue remodeling. Our goals are to understand how mechanical factors (mechanical strain, shear stress, extracellular matrix rigidity, etc.) regulate the differentiation, proliferation, and migration of stem cells and vascular cells, and to elucidate how cells sense, transduce and convert these mechanical signals into chemical signals through the cell membrane, cytoskeleton, receptors, signaling molecules, and transcriptional machinery.
