Compound (I) was obtained upon treatment of a methanolic solution of commercially available mycophenolic acid with one equivalent of sodium methanolate. After stirring for 1 h at room temperature, the solvent was evaporated to dryness in vacuo to afford the desired compound (m.p. 463 K).
