Available online 20 March 2009. Abstract We have measured the notch toughness for a range of Cu-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Alloying additions that enhance the glass-forming ability (GFA) are found to degrade the toughness. Within this particular family of Cu-BMGs, the toughness is more directly correlated with the strength (and consequently with the shear modulus or glass transition temperature), than with the Poisson’s ratio. Abstract Isothermal torque relaxation measurements of ribbon and bulk glassy Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 samples i) in the initial state, ii) after nearly full structural relaxation and iii) subsequent fast quenching from the supercooled liquid state have been performed. It has been found that while structural relaxation strongly decreases the torque relaxation rate, fast quenching of aged samples from the supercooled liquid state recovers the ability to stress relaxation. The degree of the recovery, however, strongly depends on the temperature of subsequent testing. Keywords: metallic glasses; stress relaxation; structural relaxation; recovery |
