研究課題： Image-based fracture characterisation in rock core samples

課題簡介: Fracture characterisation is a critical step to understand the rock mass strength and fluid transport behaviour in both mining and petroleum engineering. The conventional approach of core sample analysis heavily relies on the experience of onsite geologies or geotechnical engineers. The recent advancement in computer vision technology offers an alternative to fast and accurately characterise fracture properties such as dip angle, dip direction, spacing, aperture etc, which can lead to unbiased rock mass classification and fracture network reconstruction. This project aims to develop computer vision-based techniques to automatically characterise fracture properties in core samples using photo images. The obtained fracture information will be used as input to develop discrete fracture networks for geomechanical and fluid flow simulations.

申請(qǐng)要求: Students will need to have a four-year Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and other related Engineering subjects) with H1 or H1 Equivalent or Masters by Research degree to be eligible to apply. Other competencies, skills and abilities may include:
• Ability to develop and apply new research concepts;
• Background knowledge in rock mechanics / fluid mechanics would be an advantage;
• Creative approach to problem-solving, lab testing, computer programming and application in particular;
• Excellent communication skills to engage with a wide range of people;
• Excellent academic performance with strong background knowledge in mathematics, physics and numerical modelling;
• High calibre, enthusiastic and self-motivated.

英語要求: 雅思總分不低于6.5，各單科不低于6.

This PhD scholarship will cover a research stipend of $27,082 (AUD) per annum for a 3 to 4 year period. Non-Australian candidates will also need to apply for the Tuition Fee Scholarship. The student will work under the supervision of Dr Guangyao Si with frequent interaction with other staff from the School.
