Pessler Research Field: Bioinformatics, statistics (immunology) Position open for a Postdoc The Supervisor will complement the CSC postdoctoral Research assistant 500 ?/month cash top up: Title of the research: Multilevel analysis of molecular and cellular determinants of the immune response to influenza vaccination in elderly individuals More description of research topic: Elderly individuals have the highest risk of severe influenza infection, but, tragically, also have the highest risk of an inadequate immune response to seasonal influenza vaccination, even if the currently most effective adjuvanted vaccine is used. We have recently (2015-2017) conducted two trials on influenza vaccination of individuals >65 y of age with the goal of identifying immunological mechanisms and molecular biomarkers and functional networks that determine a (non) protective vaccine response in this cohort. In this study we have identified identified responders and nonresponders against the 3 vaccine antigens, established a biobank containing the major blood fractions, and have compiled extensive documentation of individual-associated medical and sociodemographic information. Laboratory analyses are ongoing, but have already resulted in a database containing multi-level data from transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic and immunologic investigations. Initial analyses have led to the identification of candidate biomarkers and differences in certain immune cell types between responders and nonresponders. The aim of the researrch project will be to use this unique set of multi-level data to perform additional in-depth bioinformatics analyses in order to (1) assess the relative contributions of the different layers to the vaccine response, (2) to search for functional networks spanning the different layers, and (3) to identify additional biomarkers for a (non)protective vaccine response. The available dataset offers great opportunities for a post-doctoral scientist to join and support a project that is already in full swing and is in great need of additional computational expertise. Specific requirements: Documented experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics, also in using the R environment for computational analyses. Understanding of and interest in basic immunologic processes and molecular biology. Working Place: TWINCORE (Hannover) Earliest Start: any time, as the data are ready for analysis.
