PhD assistantship Modeling land-based nitrate loading to receiving estuaries University of New Brunswick and Agricultural and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Description of the opportunity: A research assistantship is available for a Ph.D. student (preferred) or M.S. student with the Environmental Science and Management programs at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada. The successful applicant will develop modeling tools (integrated or distributed) to predict daily land-based nitrate loading in small groundwater-dominated agricultural watersheds in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The student will engage with the larger, interdisciplinary team and external stakeholders on the Atlantic Living Labs initiative funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The student will be based at the campus of UNB with some time spent on the AAFC Charlottetown Research and Development Centre, PE. The research project will include developing or/and modifying or/and customizing models to calculate watershed-based nitrate loading. Desired Qualifications: Candidates with an M.S. degree that are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. are preferred, though candidates with a B.S. degree interested in pursuing an M.S. may be considered. Strong technical writing ability, modelling skills, and a background in the environmental sciences, or geosciences or relevant disciplines are required. Prior experience with GIS or watershed hydrology will be considered favorably. Assistantship Details: Graduate assistantships are formal half-time, academic-year appointments accompanied by a summer stipend, with an annual estimated total of $20, 000.
