5 (five) CS PhD Positions at University of South Carolina

The Systems and Software Security Research Lab (https://cse.sc.edu/~zeng1/phd_position.html) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of South Carolina is recruiting students. We have 5 (five) PhD positions starting in Fall 2020. The research of our lab is focused on designing and building more secure computer systems, especially mobile systems and IoT devices. We also work on security issues of machine learning and apply machine learning to resolving security problems. The PhD students will be fully funded with competitive assistantship. Requirements for students: excellent coding skills and passion in research; GPA >= 3.2/4 (or top 20% in the class); Toefl >= 80 (or IELTS >= 6.5); GRE Q>=165 V>=150 (we can slightly lower the requirements on GRE and GPA if you are distinguished in other aspects, such as coding and research). Research in this area typically involves very little maths and theory, but requires high coding, innovation and system building skills and it needs you to work very hard to succeed. Dr. Qiang Zeng's homepage: https://cse.sc.edu/~zeng1/ Dr. Lannan Luo's homepage: https://cse.sc.edu/~lluo/ 為什么要申請南卡大學? 研究:南卡大學屬于卡內基分類中的R1大學, 其CS排名在全美排第82 (checked on Nov 3. 2019)。 注意csrankings由于其客觀性,現(xiàn)在越來越被廣泛認可。我們組(Dr. Qiang Zeng and Dr. Lannan Luo's group)的研究都是學科最前沿的問題,非常有利于學生發(fā)高水平的論文。學生從PhD第一學期就有屬于自己的project,而不是做工程性的coding或者給其他學生打下手,我們組的學生因此成長迅速。我們把比較多的精力和指導投入到學生身上,因材施教幫助學生找到合適的問題,大量的時間和學生一起討論解決方案,甚至一起debug。我們組的選題都是既有趣,而且又關注最重要的研究問題,包括Internet of Things, UAV, NLP-inspired binary code analysis。 在過去的一學年,雖然我們組只有三個學生,但已經(jīng)成績斐然。共發(fā)表了兩篇A類會議文章(NDSS'19, MobiCom'19), 兩篇A類期刊(TDSC, TMC), 三篇B類會議文章(DSNx2, RAID)。我們的NDSS工作是第一個將基于深度學習的NLP技術引入binary code analysis,已經(jīng)引來廣泛關注。我們的MobiCom工作是第一個為千差萬別的IoT設備提供統(tǒng)一、安全、易用的user authentication solution。我們組研究經(jīng)費充足,所以今年準備招5名PhD學生。我們熱切期望確實對安全研究有熱情的學生加入我們,作出更有意思、影響力更大的工作。 治安:南卡大學位于南卡的首府哥倫比亞市。如果僅根據(jù)網(wǎng)上數(shù)據(jù),許多人誤以為哥市治安差。這其實是一個非常大的誤解。南卡大學與州政府僅僅一街之隔,所在地區(qū)整潔漂亮,而且治安非常好。哥市確有一個不安全的區(qū)域,但離學校有幾十公里,對學習和生活其實沒有任何影響。 氣候與生活:南卡的氣候可能是全美最好的地區(qū)之一,四季分明,除了夏天會有兩個月比較熱,其他季節(jié)非常舒適,大部分時間陽光明媚。這里距離大海只有一個半小時車程,市郊有大湖,市內有河流。是一個景色宜人、干凈舒適的城市。不但自然環(huán)境優(yōu)美,而且因為是州的首府,這里生活也很便利,動物園,植物園,Costco, Walmart, Macy's, Bestbuy, 還有各種中西口味的飯店,兩家中國超市。對學生免費的、世界水平的健身館就在我們系樓旁邊。 畢業(yè)與就業(yè):我們實驗室的兩大方向就是Systems and Software Security和Deep Learning (但請注意,我們只關注與安全有關的問題)。而這兩個方向正是在中、美兩國市場需求最大的兩個方向。畢業(yè)的標準我們非常清晰,學生只需要在top-tier conferences上發(fā)表兩篇文章,就可以畢業(yè)。 |
