Ph.D. Position at CNRS for Scanning Gel Electrochemical Microscopy

Scanning Gel Electrochemical Microscopy is a novel scanning electrochemical probe technique recently developed in our lab. The concept is to use a gel probe that is approached to be in soft contact with the sample, allowing electrochemical measurements to be spatially localized in the contact area. State-of-the-art gel probes are prepared by“electrodeposition + pulling”on etched metal wires from chitosan solution and may reach a reliable lateral resolution of ca. 1-2 μm. SGECM is now being used for imaging the topography and electrochemical reactivity of samples, as well as local electrochemical deposition or etching on complex shaped surfaces. In this PhD project, we will explore the functionalization of gel probes and study their physical and chemical interactions with sample surfaces. It is expected not only to improve the elasticity and stability of gel probes, but also to offer new modes of measurements such as local recognition of surface functionalities. The project will also further develop the home-built setups of “electrodeposition + pulling” and SGECM to adapt to the deposition and applications of functionalized gel materials. The candidate is expected to have: (1) Valid Master degree by the starting date of the position. (2) Education background in Chemistry, especially in the field of electrochemistry and/or hydrogel materials. (3) Experience and interest in programming for instrumentation and/or data analysis is a bonus. (4) Fluent in English communication. French language is not mandatory.
