PhD positions The following positions for PhD students are open at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials: 2 PhD positions to investigate properties of DNA/synthetic polymer hybrid materials (4 years) Two four-year PhD positions are currently available in the Polymer Chemistry and Bioengineering group headed by Prof.dr. A. Herrmann. For details see the full description [PDF]. 2 PhD positions in Molecular Dynamics Two four-year bursary PhD positions are currently available in the Molecular Dynamics group headed by Prof. S.J. Marrink (s.j.marrink@rug.nl). In the PhD projects multi-scale computer simulation methods are used and developed to study large scale protein-protein and peptide-lipid interactions. For details see the advertisement on our web-site: http://www.rug.nl/gbb/research/r ... ics/vacancies/index PhD position in polymer chemistry In this project we will study the preparation of super hydrophilic materials to prevent adhesion of bacteria and biomolecules. Biofouling on biomedical devices can cause inflammatory reactions. So, the first challenge is to explore a new concept to synthesize super hydrophilic hyperbranched polymers and to characterize them with various techniques (NMR, SEC, MALDI-TOF, etc.). After these polymers have to be applied onto substrates their antibacterial properties will be studied. The candidate should have a strong affinity for polymer chemistry and with biomedical applications. For further information and application, please contact prof. dr. J.A. Loontjens (J.A.loontjens@rug.nl). PhD position in condensed matter theory A 4-year PhD position is currently available at the Theory of Condensed Matter Group of the University of Groningen . The group is part of the Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Materials Science Centre.The research will be focused on theoretical study of low-dimensional electron systems, such as raphene and will be performed in active collaboration with experimental groups within the Materials Science Centre. No teaching duties are required. An ideal candidate should have a good grasp of quantum mechanics and be interested in applications of theoretical ideas to realistic materials. For further information, please contact Maxim Mostovoy: M.Mostovoy@rug.nl PhD Position in Theoretical Chemistry "Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Materials for Spin-polarized Transport" A 4-year PhD position (AIO) is available in a multi-disciplinary programme aimed at the design of novel hybrid organic-inorganic materials with functional properties that are highly tuneable by variations of composition, structure, and dimensionality. In addition to this static tunability, the functional properties of these materials should also be easily tuneable through external stimuli such as electrical, magnetic or optical fields. This PhD project focuses on the theoretical study of the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties of the materials, in close collaboration with fellow PhD students working in experimental groups on this programme.
