Magnesium alloys have strong planar anisotropy, e.g., the tensile properties in 0, 45 and 90 deg to RD are very different. This is due to the fact that magnesium alloys usually have h.c.p. structure. Generally speaking, the lower the symmetry of lattice unit, the higher the anisotropy. For example, h.c.p. magnesium has much stronger anisotropy than f.c.c. aluminum. The strong anisotropy in magnesium alloys can be explained by (i) the texture, (ii) slip system and (iii) Schmid factor. The texture in magnesium sheets is mainly the basal texture {0001}<11-20>. During deformation, there are 4 possible slip systems: (1) Basal {0001}<11-20> (2) Prismatic {10-10}<11-20> (3) Pyramidal {11-22}<11-2-3> + {10-12}<11-20> (4) Twinning <10-11> on {10-12} At elevated temperature, it is more complex because grain boundary sliding is involved. When you calculate the Schmid factors at different directions, you will see that tensile at 45 deg to RD is the easiest, and tensile at 0 deg is slightly easier than at 90 deg. Therefore, it is often observed that YS-45 < YS-0 < YS-90 and EL-45 > EL-0 > EL-90. However, it is also dependent on the chemical composition, the temper (as-rolled or fully annealed), the grain size, the forming temperature and many other factors. Sometimes the difference between the 0 deg and 90 deg is not very obvious, and it may also be reverse in some alloys under certain conditions, i.e., YS-0 > YS-90 and EL-0 < EL-90.
