【Pure water】Trial of French former president begins
|
|
It's the first-ever trial of a former French head-of-state The embezzlement court case against former French president Jacques Chirac has opened in Paris. Chirac is accused of misusing public funds during his time as Paris mayor. He is alleged to have employed friends and political associates at City Hall for doing little or no work, in one of several corruption scandals that rocked France during the 1980s. Chirac was absent on the first day of the hearing, and is *not required by law to attend the trial. Lawyers spent the first part of the trial wrangling over constitutional issues. This could lead to the adjournment of the trial, pending a ruling from France's highest court. If found guilty, Chirac could face a 150,000-euro fine , and up to 10 years in prison. |
