PhD Studentship Homogeneous Catalysis with Organometallic Complexes of the 4f-metals - Dr. Mark Crimmin University College London Closing Date: 1st August 2011 Summary: A 36-month IMPACT funded PhD in "Homogeneous Catalysis with Organometallic Complexes of the 4fmetals" administered at the Department of Chemistry at UCL. The position is available from September 2011 to work with Dr. Mark Crimmin on the study of nucleophilic reactive intermediates, such as onium ylides and non-stabilised carbenes, at 4f-metals centres with the goal of developing new catalytic reactions. While the project is largely synthetic in nature, it sits at the boundary of organic and organometallic chemistry. During the first year of the programme the student will learn Schlenk line chemistry techniques required for the handling of air- and moisture sensitive compounds. Further training will be provided in the techniques used to study organometallic reaction mechanisms (including kinetic analysis and computational methods). Successful applicants should have or be expected to obtain a first or upper second class degree in physical sciences and have a strong interest in homogeneous catalysis. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic and have a broad background in synthetic chemistry. Compensation will be awarded in the form of a tax-free maintenance stipend of £15,940 per annum, and tuition fees paid in full at the home rate.
