| Case study research was able to combine both elements, quantitative and qualitative, and use the properties of both. The ultimate value of the case research was not focus primarily on the properties of the quantity of collected data, as represented by numbers. It was rather focus on the properties of the research data in its holistic nature. Such concern exhibited itself with the properties and character of the observed situation, conducted interviews, or historical data analysis. The history of the case study as a research inquiry goes back to early forms of naturalistic inquiry as the primary research tool until the development of the scientific method. A number of disciplines, from sociology to anthropology can be credited with the primary shaping of qualitative research methodology as it is known and used today. Robert Park, an ex-newspaper reporter and editor who became very influential in developing sociological case studies at the University of Chicago in the 1920s, can be credited with early development of formalized qualitative inquiry. Park used newspaper techniques that were based on observation. French and Bell (1978) describe his work as the early attempts to observe and document local events in a way that pointed to major social trends. |

| 個案研究可以結(jié)合定量研究與定性研究兩種元素，同時采納這兩者的特點。案例研究的最重要的價值不是單純的集中在定量研究中采集的數(shù)據(jù)的特點上，即通過數(shù)字來反映問題；而是關注這些從整體性的本質(zhì)上研究數(shù)據(jù)的特點。這種考慮在觀察到情形的特點與品質(zhì)，進行的采訪，或者歷史數(shù)據(jù)分析中展示出來。個案研究作為一種研究手段的歷史可以追溯到早期的以自然調(diào)查為基本研究工具的形式直到它作為一種科學研究的手段。許多的原則，從社會學到人類學都歸功于初具雛形的定性研究才能夠有今天被人們所知曉和采用。Robert Park,一個前新聞記者與編輯，在20世紀20年代的芝加哥大學，最終成為在發(fā)展社會學研究方面極富影響力的人物，因為他為質(zhì)性研究標準化地早期發(fā)展做出了巨大的貢獻。 Park采用了新聞報導基于觀察的技巧。 French 和Bell（1978）把Park的工作描述為早期的一種以指向主流社會趨勢的視角去觀察和記錄當?shù)匕l(fā)生的事件的嘗試。 |
