Researchers have studied the effects of biofilm accumulation on the terminal settling velocity (Ut) and the expansion coeffi- cient (n) in fluidized bed reactors [15–21].Most of themreported their results from correlations originally derived for rigid par- ticles that were modified for biofilm system applications. In a previous work [22], a sensitivity analysis of correlations pro- posed by these authors for estimation of parameters Ut and n was presented. The aim was to show the dispersion of results using the most quoted correlations. However, they have been mainly applied to aerobic biofilm systems, and seem to be less appropriate for anaerobic systems than the original equation of Richardson and Zaki [23], quite used to calculate n in most works focused on anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (Eq. (4)), and the equation provided by Foscolo et al. [24] to calculate Ut (Eq. (3)). These correlations are valid for the range of Reynolds number (Ret) investigated, and are here used to calculate Ut and n: |
