Materials Science and Technology A Comprehensive Treatment in 18 Volumes The Simulation of Materials Microstmctures and Properties Foreword In writing a text on simulation in Materials Science, Dr. Raabe is taking an important step in the development of Computational Materials Science and Engineering. This aspect of the field has been slowly but surely talcing root and has attracted a number of researchers to the area. It is a mark of the increasing importance of the computational approach that we now have this carefully thought out compendium of simulation techniques. He discusses not just the theoretical and numerical basis for each technique but also gives the context for where each method is appropriate. It is notable that he has actively used and published on many of the methods that he discusses. Moreover, the range of length (and time) scales is appropriately broad in a way that corresponds to the breadth of our discipline, which deals with everything from civil engineering structures such as bridges to electronic devices that are a few atoms wide. Materials science often deals with competing, complex mechanisms, and it is very useful to have a third tool available to complement theory and experiment in order to verify or test our understanding. Even such basic needs as equilibrium phase relationships will depend on computational methods with sparse experimental verification. For those" of us with a strong interest in microstructure, it is very exciting to see microstructural prediction catch up to the successes of continuum methods in heat flow, fluid flow and mechanical deformation. In writing this text, Dierk Raabe is to be thanked for providing us with such a complete review of computational methods in Materials Science and Engineering. A. D.
