18/04/2011 MEDIA 10 QUESTION WITH...MATTHIAS SCHEFFLER The TYC asks 10 questions to leading scientists and engineers to give some insight into their work, interests and heroes... This time we talk to Professor Matthias Scheffler. Matthias is the Theory Department of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society. We asked Professor Scheffler... 1) What is the best thing about your job? Working on exciting scientific puzzles that I can choose myself or together with colleagues/friends. Collaborating with highly motivated people nearly everywhere on this planet, and being embedded in a stimulating international "family". Watching how young people develop and build their own scientific career. 2) What projects are you working on at the moment? Understanding fundamental aspects of the chemical and physical properties and the possible function of materials (surfaces, interfaces, clusters, and nanostructures). More specifically: Multi-scale modelling from first principles (i.e. starting from the quantum-mechanical electronic structure and modelling the function of real materials). And even more specifically: "density functional theory and beyond (new and improved concepts and methods)", "basic sciences of conservation, conversion, and storage of energy", "organic/inorganic interfaces (materials for novel devices)", "understanding the stability and folding/unfolding dynamics of bio molecules", and more. Movies: www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/movies/Ala15-unfolding www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/movies/catalytic-CO-oxidation www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/movies/unicat-methane-conversion 3) What is the most amazing single thing you could tell me about your field of research? The quality of electronic structure theory and its linkage to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics is reaching a level that enables us to predict novel materials "from scratch" (only using theory) and to identify materials with improved functionality. It is becoming possible that by simply "data-mining" a wealth of possible compounds may be identified for optimum properties and function. What is starting right now may be called a "materials-discovery revolution". 4) What is the biggest problem or challenge you face in your field? A) Identifying optimum descriptors for the next level of a "data mining" materials library (compare item 3). B) Improving the efficiency of accurate density functionals (beyond the random phase approximation for the description of electron correlation). 5) What, from your area of research, would you like to know the answer to in your lifetime? See item 4. 6) What makes a good scientist or engineer? A) Work, work, and work, and critically evaluate your results and interpretations. B) Don't confuse data, analysis, and interpretation. C) When you start and perform your studies, don't (always) ask "what is it good for", but keep your eyes and brain open to recognize potential novel function(s) after you have understood the results. 7) Who are your scientific heroes - dead or alive? Titus Lucretius Carus (et al.): De rerum natura, Michael Faraday, Richard Feynman, and more. 8) How do you think scientists can make their work accessible to the public? Life and developing societies need different types of people, personalities, and cultures. Scientists (as also artists and other people) should do what they can do best. Thus, in general, scientists should do science, and journalists should explain things to the public. 9) What is your advice for anyone wanting to be a scientist or engineer? See item 6. 10) Any last comments...? That's it... [ Last edited by valenhou001 on 2012-3-26 at 17:28 ] |
