Positions available at HHMI Janelia Farm with Albert Cardona: 1) Postdoc in physiology of identified neuronal connections We have reconstructed with electron microscopy the neural circuitry downstream of somatosensory neurons in fly larva. Each interneuron has unique identity, being identifiable across individuals, and we have a genetic driver line specific for each (hundreds!). Each neuron receives a reasonably stereotyped number of synapses from specific, also stereotyped somatosensory neurons and from other interneurons. The goal is to quantify with electrophysiology and calcium imaging the effect of a low or high number of synapses between two neurons, these being at specific locations of their neuronal arbors, and considering the known locations of GABAergic inputs as well on that arbor. 2) Software engineer or postdoc in computer vision We reconstruct neuronal circuits from large-scale electron microscopy image volumes [4]. As a postdoc, you would be developing novel algorithms that improve on what is quoted below, and delivering proof of principle implementations. As a software engineer you would generate high-performance implementations of known algorithms, such as: A) implement Saalfeld's elastic registration method for a cluster (reference implementation exists in java [1], multithreaded). All reference algorithms exist formalized as well in a paper that we are about to publish. B) implement Funke's neuronal reconstruction algorithm [2] as a server-side process for CATMAID [3].
