Two PhD student positions are available in a project The Network Interface between Gene Regulation and Metabolism Mathematical Description, Dynamics, and Evolutionary Design Principles supervised by Stefan Bornholdt (Universität Bremen, Germany) and Marc-Thorsten Hütt (Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany). Project Outline: Within this project we will interface a material flow network (metabolism) with a Boolean regulatory network (gene regulation), and analyze the corresponding dynamic processes on these interacting networks. We employ mathematical models for the dynamics of both systems to generate an Integrated view and understanding. In particular we want to learn how the interdependence between the two systems arises from evolutionary constraints and How each system has shaped the other on an evolutionary time scale. Candidates should have a background or strong interest in Statistical Physics of Complex Networks or Computational Systems Biology and solid programming skills (e.g., Matlab/Mathematica/C++/Python).
