With a staff of 5000, Forschungszentrum a member of the Helmholtz Association is one of the largest interdisciplinary research centres in Europe and stands for the next generation of key technologies. Work with us on the grand challenges in the fields of health, energy & environment, and information technology, as well as on the many and varied tasks of research management. For our Institute of Bio- and Geosciences - Agrosphere (IBG 3), we are seeking a PhD Student Natural Science / Environmental Science for a three-year project The Agrosphere Institute conducts research to improve our understanding of biogeochemical and hydrological processes in terrestrial systems. One specific focus lies on the effect of climate and land use change on biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and important elements. The goal of the PhD work is to elucidate the role of natural nanoparticles/colloids in nutrient cycles. The use of stabile isotopes is envisaged. In order to characterize and quantify the nanoparticles from riverine and lysimeter systems as well as their nutrient loads, field flow fractionation (FFF) methods are combined with ICP-MS analyses as well as isotope ratio MS. The research will use existing TERENO and SoilCan experimental facilities at the catchment, field and lysimeter scale. Main tasks of the PhD student will be: Developing FFF methods to isolate and quantify natural nanoparticles and their associated nutrient loads Monitoring and characterization of natural nanoparticles in TERENO/SoilCan sites Elucidating climate and land use change effects on natural nanoparticles and nutrient cycling Documentation of the results in peer-reviewed ISI refereed journals For further information visit our website at http://www2.fz-juelich.de/icg/icg-4/, and http://teodoor.icg.kfa-juelich.de/overview-en?set_language=en (TERENO). Requirements: M.Sc. (or equivalent) in natural science / environmental science or a related discipline with a good final grade (in the German system 2.0 or better), preferable with knowledge about environmental chemistry, colloid chemistry, analytical methods and/or field experiments. The candidate should be fluent in English and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.
