Emission and excitation spectra of powders were recorded on a ARC spectrometer (monochromators of 300mm focal length (1200 gmm−1), a 450W Xe-light source, Photomultiplier tube P2) at an angle of incidence of ca. 50◦ using a praying mantis type sample set-up. Reflectance spectra were obtained using an integrating sphere with a diameter of 70mm and 10mm port opening versus commercial white and black references (Labsphere), and BaSO4, respectively. Transparent monoliths were prepared in 1 cm plastic cuvettes, allowing standard absorption and luminescence measurements. The intensity of the 450W Xe source was detected with an Acton Photomultiplier tube P2. The excitation spectra were measured against Lumogen Red doped polymethylmethacrylate (doping level 50 ppm) powder and a polished disk of 3mm thickness, respectively, to evaluate the transparent monoliths. The Lumogen Red, with a constant quantum yield of 42% in the excitation range between 250 nm and 500 nm was generously provided by BASF/Ludwigshafen. It should be pointed out that the quantum yields given may be imprecise by an estimated margin of ±10%, however, the general trends described here will not be affected. |
