Antioxidant behavior of a novel sulfur-bearing hindered pheno lic antioxidant

abstract A novel sulfur-bear ing hindered pheno lic antioxidant with a mole cular weight of 130 5.9 (SAO) was success fully sy nthesiz ed via thiol-a crylate M ichael addi tion reaction and its str ucture was clari fi ed by nuclear magnetic resonance (N MR) and fou rier t ransform in frared spectra (FTIR). The short- term oxidat ion induc tion tim e (OIT) of polypropylene (P P) compo unds obtai ned at 210C showed that the OIT value of SAO-con tainin g PP was higher than that of PP using Chinox 1035 wit h a molecul ar weight of 6 42.9 as a stabil izer. Long-term accelerated thermal aging test of PP compou nds in an air oven at 150C, however, exhib ited that the aging resistance of SAO-stabili zing PP was in ferior to that of 1035-containin g PP, quite contrary to their respective short-term effec t on PP sta bilization . The pos sible reasons of this contradiction were discu ssed from t he viewpoint of the antioxidan ts ’ molecul ar struc ture and the lim-itati ons of the OI T approach in lifetim e prediction |
