Metamaterials Research Dr Xianzhong Chen x.chen@hw.ac.uk JWS2014/14: Active ultrathin optoelectronic devices with novel materials Optical metamaterials and a new class of two dimensional materials (e.g. graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides) have captured the attention of the scientific community due to their unusual electronic and optical properties, which provide new opportunities to develop ultrathin optoelectronic devices with novel functionalities. This project aims to expand our recent findings in developing ultrathin metadevices (e.g. dual-polarity metalens, broadband vortex beam generator) into a viable research programme by combining metamaterials and new two-dimensional materials. http://www.eps.hw.ac.uk/research/apply You might be a potential candidate if you are interested in both photonics and nanofabrication. A James-Watt Scholarship is available in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK), supervised by Dr. X Chen, to develop novel optical metamaterials and their applications in imaging and information processing. Metamaterials are man-made materials which have unusual electromagnetic properties that may not be found in nature or their constituent components. Benefiting from the freedom in tailoring electromagnetic properties, various metamaterials have been developed to enable some ground-breaking applications, such as invisibility cloaking, super-imaging and negative refraction. Metasurface, an emerging field of metamaterials that consists of only a monolayer of planar metallic structures, have shown great promise for controlling light propagation, while keeping fabrication cost low, as they do not require complicated three-dimensional nanofabrication techniques. Unlike the phase change by the accumulated optical path in traditional optical elements, the abrupt phase change takes place at the interface when a linearly polarized incident light is converted to its cross polarization or a circularly polarized light is converted to its opposite helicity. Metasurfaces can provide the desired phase discontinuities, which have been experimentally demonstrated in novel metadevices such as broadband vortex beam generator, 3D optical holography, ultrathin dual-plarity metalenses and polarization dependent unidirectional surface plasmon polariton excitation. As a new field of metamaterials, there are a lot of exciting phenomena and unusual prototype devices waiting for you to explore. You are welcome to visit this webpage (http://www.eps.hw.ac.uk/staff-directory/x-chen.htm) if you want to know more about our research. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong experimental background in the following related areas: plasmonics, nanophotonics, metamaterials or grapheme related research. Experience in using cleanroom and nanofabrication facility is desirable. Commonly used nanofabrication facilities such as electron beam lithography, focused ion beam, etcher and evaporator for film deposition are available in the school. Experience in CST microwave studio, COMSOL Multiphysics and math tools such as Matlab will be a plus. This project will be supervised by Dr X Chen and Prof. B. D. Gerardot (http://gerardot.eps.hw.ac.uk/). During this studentship you will be exposed to a wide range of exciting areas including nanophotonics, optical metamaterials, plasmonics, optical design and nanofabrication. The ultrathin planar metadevices you develop will be directly used in imaging and information processing. Informal academic enquiries should be directed to Dr Xianzhong Chen (x.chen@hw.ac.uk), with a copy of your current CV, cover letter and two reference letters. All general enquiries should be directed to the Postgraduate Admissions Office (pgadmissions@hw.ac.uk). How to apply: We require several pieces of information, including the James-Watt reference numbers from the projects above as part of the application. To apply, please read over our advice on applying for a James-Watt Studentship 1. Important Information before you Apply When applying through the Heriot-Watt on-line system please ensure you provide the following information: (a) in “Planned Programme of Study” (Checklist Item 6): Planned Programme of Study presents you with a drop-down menu. Choose Chemistry PhD, Physics PhD, …… as appropriate. Supervisor provides a free text box. Enter supervisor’s name. (b) in “Background Information” (Checklist Item 9): Proposed Area of Research provides a free text box. Enter Title and Reference number (JWS2014/xx) of the Scholarship for which you are applying. This information will greatly assist us in tracking your application. 2. Applications Applications must be made through the Heriot-Watt on-line application system, http://www.eps.hw.ac.uk/research/apply 3.
