Also, UM has started to focus on research in both basic and applied fields and is on the fast track of development from an education oriented university to research oriented university. The recent launched faculty of health sciences (FHS, https://fhs.umac.mo/) has been equipped with top level laboratories and will provide exceptional core facilities, including next generation sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, drug discovery, advanced imaging, bioinformatics, histology, flow cytometry, mouse engineering and facility etc. The first batch of scholars is all recruited from world level institutes and universities such as NIH/USA, CUHK/Hong Kong, John Hopkins/USA, Oxford/British, and NUS/Singapore etc. These Top level Scientists have either well established research record with reputation in several research fields or great potential of development. Importantly, the new faculty is well-funded by direct funding support from university and extramural funding opportunity from Macau Fundation. Combining together, these unchallengeable advantages provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic and translational research programs in biomedical sciences. Dr. Lijun Di ( https://fhs.umac.mo/faculty-and-staff/faculty/di-lijun/), Assistant professor of FHS, mainly focus on the research of transcriptional regulation of gene expression by addressing the mechanism of transcription and gene expression regulation network. Also, Dr. Di applied the gene transcription regulation to disease related mechanisms. For instance, he has made important findings in breast cancer research by discovering the molecular connection between metabolic diseases such as obesity or diabetes and breast cancer risk. Dr. Di also illustrated the transcriptional regulation mechanism of CtBP, a common cofactor of transcription regulation, and its important role in breast cancer development (Nat Struct Mol Biol. 2010 Dec;17(12):1406-13; Nat Commun. 2013;4:1449). The current on-going projects focus on disease related gene expression regulation centered on CtBP and BRCA1. The techniques required for these projects include basic molecular biology methods, high throughput deep sequencing, cell biological assays, cell imaging, histology, and mouse engineering related works. Therefore, the successful candidate need to be self-motivated, collaborative, and with the ability to learn new things quickly. The candidates will be in the faculty-funded PhD program. The salary will be 9,500 MOP (approximately 7,400 RMB). Also, the living cost in Macau is relatively low without income tax, comparing to most of the industrial countries including USA, Japan etc. The successful candidates will hold master degree (or will) in relevant fields and is expected to have publications in his/her research field. The candidate should have experiences in molecular biology and biochemistry research field. Further experience in cancer biology or bioinformatics will be considered at a higher priority.
