As a non-alternative heteroaromatic system, indolizine has a special electronic structure,which has long drawn much theo- retical interest.1,2 Besides, indolizine derivatives have been found to possess avariety of biological activities such as anti- inflammatory,3 antiviral,4 aromatase inhibitory,5 analgestic ,6 and antitumor7activities. They have also shown to be cal- cium entry blockers 8 and potent antioxidants inhibiting lipid peroxidation in vitro . 9 As such, indolizines are important synthetic targets inview of developing new pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer,7 cardiovascular diseases,3b,10 and HIV infections.11In particular, indolizines annulated at the 1,2-positions are found in several naturally occurring alkaloids with important biologica lactivity,such as incamp- tothecin 12 and nuevamine.13 A few synthetic 1,2-annulated indolizines have also displayed interesting biological activ- ity to serve as brain protecting and anticancer agents. 14 In addition, polycyclic indolizine derivatives have been found to have long wavelength absorption and fluorescence in the visible region. The synthesis of these types of compounds hasdrawnthegreatinterestofchemiststodevelop,forexam- ple, novel classes of dyes and biological markers.15 |
