作者介紹: W.M.White,Professor, Geological Sciences,4112 Snee Hall, 607/255-7466; white@geology.cornell.edu,B.A. 1971 (California at Berkeley); Ph.D. 1977 (Rhode Island) Following completion of his doctorate in oceanography, White did postdoctoral work at the Carnegie Institution of Washington (1977-79) and at the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver (1979-80). From 1980 to 1985 he was a staff scientist at the Max Planck Institut für Chemie in Mainz, Germany, and then he spent a year as associate professor in the College of Oceanography at Oregon State University. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1986. He spent the first seven months of 1995 in France as a visiting professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieur de Lyon and the Université de Rennes.
