Some tips for learning Polymer Science
|

Polymer Science is a very young science, since the concepts of polymer was first introduced by German Chemist Hermann Staudinger until in 1920s. Similar to all other sciences, Polymer Science has its own logic. Polymer Science can be roughly divided into Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Physics and Polymer Processing. The primary mission of Polymer Chemistry investigates how to synthesize a macromolecule from proper monomers or oligomers. To well understand this branch, you should be familiar with knowledge in Organic Chemistry firstly, because that before designing polymeric structures you should can design monomers’ or oligomers’ structures. This is just like a baby should learn well how to crawl before he/she can walk. Besides basic synthetic methods such as step-growth polymerization and chain-growth polymerization in Polymer Chemistry, some other important reactions in Organic Chemistry such as Michael reaction and conjugate additions are also important in Polymer Chemistry. As a typical example, Michael reaction and conjugate additions are important tools in designing chemical structures for hyper-branched polymers. Basic reactions in Organic Chemistry are the foundation of designing functional polymeric materials. If you consider studying Polymer Chemistry in depth, I’d like to recommend you read Elias James Corey’s famous book ‘The Logic of Chemical Synthesis’. The primary mission of Polymer Physics studies structures and properties of polymers. Polymer Physics was founded by Paul J. Flory in the late 1940s. But modern concepts in Polymer Physics were introduced by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes until in the late 1970s. To well understand conventional concepts in Polymer Physics, I’d like to recommend you read a Chinese scientist Pingsheng He’s book ‘Structures and Properties of Polymers’. This book was my textbook when I was still a student in college. If you want to grasp modern concepts of Polymer Physics, I recommend you first read Michael Rubinstein’s book ‘Polymer Physics’ and Iwao Teraoka’s book ‘Polymer Solutions’, then read Pierre-Gilles de Gennes’ famous book ‘Scaling Concepts in Polymer Physics’. As a trick to well understand ‘scaling concepts’, you should firstly understand blob model in depth. Before you truly well understand this blob model, I guess you could not progress further in Polymer Physics. This is just like you can’t learn well Newtonian Mechanics unless you can well understand particle model. Blob model is a significant important concept in modern Polymer Physics. The primary mission of Polymer Processing investigates how to produce products from polymeric materials. Generally, Polymer Processing is a hybrid of science and engineering. Well understanding this branch needs well understanding the relation between structures and properties of polymers. A good introduction textbook to this branch is an abovementioned Chinese scientist Pingsheng He’s book ‘Structures and Properties of Polymers’. After reading this book, I recommend you read Zehev Tadmor’s book ‘Principles of Polymer Processing’. As a trick to well understand this branch, you should learn as much Mathematics as you can. I don’t think you can grasp well this branch unless you have a good Math background. At last, only learning knowledge from books is not enough. After or within learning basic concepts in Polymer Science, you should know some new concepts in this science. Learning from scholar journals, patents and Internet is also important. Some important scholar journals about Polymer Science are listed as bellow.
