Thermal mechanical calculation revealed that the highest compressive stresses concentrated above half way up the snorkels due to the overlap of vertical and hoop stresses. In the case of upper snorkel, the concentrated compressive stresses correspond to areas just above the tuyeres. In addition, the upper snorkel lining would also subject to vigorous lifting gas stirring and cooling, which would add extra thermal stresses and accelerating the erosion of the working lining3. The initial thermal stresses could reach such a level forming micro-cracks and weakening the hot face structure, which would be easily penetrated by steel or slag, leading to fast wear. Bricks with increased stiffness and high thermal expansion coefficient would intensify the thermal stresses at the initial stage of the campaign. A higher preheating temperature and well soaked lining will reduce the compressive stresses at the first heat. |
