The AM3 Lab (http://am3.info) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas has multiple graduate assistantships available in Spring/Fall 2015. The research focus of the AM3 Lab is on additive manufacturing and our mission is to develop the next generation 3D printers that is competitive with traditional manufacturing methods in terms of cost efficiency and functionality but with far better capability and flexibility. We are particularly interested in prospective students with background/experience in the following areas to help us accomplish our mission. 1. Thermo-fluids: We seek highly motivated students with strong theoretical background in fluids and heat transfer and proficient scientific programming skills. The research focus is to understand the fluids and heat transfer behavior during additive manufacturing processes for process control and optimization. Experience/background in the following areas is preferred: a). Multiphase flow; b). Solid-liquid interaction; c). Heat transfer and phase transition; d). scientific programming skills: C/C++, Fortran, parallel computing; e). FEM software: e.g. COMSOL. 2. Mechatronics/Automation: We seek highly motivated students with strong experimental and hands-on skills, especially in the area of mechatronics and automation. The research focus is to build 3D printing testbed and platform and necessary experimental setup for process observation and analysis. Experience/background in the following areas is preferred: a). Design and implementation of electro-mechanical hardware system; b). Arduino/Raspberry Pi/Labview/Microcontroller; c). Circuits/PCB design; d). Optics; e). MEMS cleanroom fabrication is a plus.
