10 PhD candidates wanted from The School for Contacts in Nanosystems

CinN_first_call.pdf The School for Contacts in Nanosystems invites applications for PHD FELLOWSHIPS The PhD programme Contacts in Nanosystems brings together the expertise of physicists and engineers at the three German universities in Braunschweig, Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Hannover joining with PTB Braunschweig to achieve a better understanding and control of contact effects in nanostructures. The School for Contacts in Nanosystems promotes students at different levels of education and introduces them to cutting-edge research in experimental and theoretical projects performed by the partners involved. Entry to the programme is available to graduates with a master's or diploma degree in physics, technical physics, material science, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, or similar degrees. The School for Contacts in Nanosystems also supports fast track careers for students with an excellent bachelor's degree. For detailed information, please refer to the webpage (www.nth-nano.de). In the first round, up to 10 new fellowships will be granted starting February, 1th 2015. Students interested in nanosystems can apply up to December, 15th 2014. See our website for details on the registration. http://www.nth-nano.de One of the major problems in the use of nanotechnology is the connection of nanostructures with the macroscopic world. Topic of the PhD programme "Contacts in Nanosystems: Interactions, Control and Quantum Dynamics" is therefore the control of the contact to nanosystems. The contact is understood here not only as an electrical contact between two conductors, but in the more general sense as the coupling and interaction between the two systems, which can be of different dimension. Coupling effects can be purely electrical in nature and be caused by the Coulomb interaction, but can also involve the spin of the charge carriers, or also include the coupling to plasmonic excitations. The focus of investigations is on interaction effects and studies of control and quantum dynamics in particular of quantum dots and nanowires. These systems are studied experimentally and theoretically in terms of their electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. The working groups of the PhD programme have access to a broad material base. Particularly with regard to III-V semiconductor heterostructure systems, the groups are excellently equipped. So there is in Braunschweig a focus for GaN epitaxy and also in Clausthal GaN epitaxy is operated and studied, while in Hannover, at the PTB and also in Clausthal GaAs / AlGaAs / InAs systems are grown and investigated. However, novel material systems, such as topological insulators and the unique material graphene are also used since a number of similarities and synergies of these material systems exist with III-V - semiconductor systems. In addition to pure basic research, the PhD theses work on application aspects in particular. The research projects allow a deep understanding of the contact phenomena, so that systems can be designed and constructed with new functionalities in application fields such as sensor technology, energy technology, communication technology, but also medical technology.
