Efforts to makq an inventory of world flora to facilitate the conservation
and use of plants are currently hindered by the lack of knowledge regarding the
correct scientific (Latin) and popular names of plants. This could be remedied by
dictionaries containing the names of plants in different languages, particularly
those not so well known in Western countries, such as Russian and Clunese.
This has prompted us to produce a Latin-Russian-En^ish-Chinese
dictionary of plant names, containing over 100 000 names of about 10 000
species and varieties of flowering and fern-like plants. Such a dictionary has
never before been published. То assist in pronunciation of the Chinese names
there is a Latin transcription of Chinese characters, and at the end of the
dictionary is an explanation of the pronunciations of the main Chinese characters
in Russian and English.
The genus and family names are based mostly on Willis (1973),though
some genera have since been revised (e,g. Prunus,Chrysanthemum). Recent
botanical congresses have recommended the following substitutions: Compositae
for Asteraceae, Cruciferae for Brassicaceae, Gramineae for Poaceae? Guttiferae
for Clusiaceae’ Labiatae for Lamiaceae,Leguminosae for Fabaceae, Palmae for
Arecaceae, and Umbelliferae for Apiaceae.
In contrast to the dictionary by Р. M. Macura (1979), all names of species
and varieties are given with the names of their authors. The correct spelling and
abrreviations are generally based on
c
Authors of Plant Names '(Brummitt and
Powell,1992).
All the plants in the Dictionary are arranged in alphabetical order according
to their Latin name (see Willis31973; Index Kewensis,ets.). Following the Latin
name are the main Latin synonyms, with the Latin family name given in brackets.
Following this are the Russian name,English name, and Chinese character name.
Most of the characters are given in the füll form, which is typically used in
Chinese and phamacological literature.
In addition to the Dictionary there are alphabetically-ordered indices of
Russian’ English and Chinese plant names as well as Latin synonyms. The
number following each name shows the numerical order in the Dictionary
according to the Latin name. An index of Chinese characters had to be omitted
due to space limitations. There is a bibliography at the end of the book.
In upgrading the dictionary for computer we found 31 synonymous names;
their numbers are marked by an asterisk and followed by the number of main
plant names in brackets.
The parts of the dictionary in Latin,Russian and English were prepared by
Prof. I. Schroeter. The majority of the Chinese part was prepared by V. A.
Panasiuk, со- author of the
4
The Large Chinese-Russian Dictionary' (1983-
1984). The editor-in-chief of the Dictionary is Prof. V.A.Bykov.
