In order to maintain health for the general population, a great deal of preventative measures is spent to determine both exogenous and endogenous levels of metals in foodstuffs. The target hazard quotient (THQ) was developed by US EPA (1989) as one quantitative way to evaluate potential health risks associated with long-term exposure to chemical pollutants in foodstuffs, and the THQ is a ratio between the measured concentration and the oral reference dose, weighted by the length and frequency of exposure, amount ingested, body weight and average time for non-carcinogens. A few of THQ investigations were carried out on foodstuffs with a focus on estimating health risks associated with exposure to heavy metals found in seafoods (US EPA,1989; Chien et al., 2002), milk (Chien et al., 2006), beverages (Naughton and Petro ′czi, 2008) and vegetables at mine sites (Zhuang et al., 2009), but no study reported the individual and combined THQ values for commonly consumed vegetables from markets. |
