Electrochemical Polymer Electrolyte Membranes
Preface
Clean energy technologies, which include storage and conversion, play an important
role in the sustainable development of human society. Among clean energy technologies, electrochemical and solar technologies are considered the most promising,
environmentally friendly, and sustainable technologies. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) is one of the most important and necessary components in these energy
technologies, which include fuel cells, batteries, electrolyzers, and solar energy conversion devices. Therefore, a comprehensive book with a focus on PEM science and
technology, and associated major energy applications, seemed useful and necessary
in order to support this technology’s advancements.
The book chapters contributed by various experts in the field give a comprehensive
description of the science and technology of various types of PEMs, including material selection, synthesis, characterization, and applications in various energy devices.
The authors of all chapters in this book have both strong academic and industrial
expertise; they provide fundamentals as well as up-to-date technical knowledge and
information. Furthermore, this book emphasizes and systematically summarizes in
detail PEM science and technologies, current achievements, challenges, and future
directions, making the book attractive to researchers working in the fields of both
polymer materials and clean energy.
It is also our belief that this book will serve as a resource benefiting researchers, students, industrial professionals, and manufacturers by providing a systematic
overview of the materials, system design, and related aspects of the development of
PEMs for various energy applications. In particular, information on selecting existing materials/technologies and developing new materials/technologies to improve
the performance of energy devices should be very useful.
As the editors of this book, we acknowledge and express our sincere thanks to
all the chapter contributors for their effective work in preparing and developing their
respective chapters. We also express our appreciation to CRC Press for inviting us
to lead this book project and to Allison Shatkin for her guidance and support in the
book preparation process.
