When U.S. spies tapped three successive French presidents’ personal cellphones, they were after more than just details about the leaders’ love lives, said Grzegorz Kostrzewa-Zorbas. It has been “unofficially confirmed” in Paris that the hack—first revealed in leaked documents—also saw U.S. intelligence penetrate the military communication systems between the country’s armed forces and its president, giving the spooks access to information on France’s nuclear weapons policy. That would be a “serious problem” for France. While the U.S. and France are NATO allies, Paris has kept itself aloof from NATO command with regard to nukes, running its own nuclear deterrence policy separately from the alliance. Having been defeated twice in a century—by Prussia in 1870 and by Nazi Germany in 1940—France takes its deterrent arsenal extremely seriously. It is the third-largest nuclear power in the world, after the U.S. and Russia, and its fierce national pride makes it reluctant to rely on allies for protection. That’s reason enough for French officials to be angry at the U.S. breach. But what’s worse is the possibility that a non-ally could now get the information. After all, the U.S. “sometimes loses” at cyberwarfare. French nuclear secrets could well end up “in Chinese or Russian hands.” ================ 神馬事情最后都給兔子打一板，CAO。 |
