Dr. Zhiwu (Drew) Wang invites applications for a graduate research assistantship at PhD level in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Virginia Tech (The Environmental Engineering graduate program at the Virginia Tech ranks 10th among the nation’s best engineering school according to U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Graduate Schools 2016 survey). Successful candidates will receive instruction and perform this research at the Occoquan Laboratory in Manassas, VA, just an hour’s drive from Washington DC. Dr. Wang’s research focuses on the development of sustainable biological processes for the treatment of liquid and solid wastes, with the overarching goal of advancing the environmental engineering research and serving the technical needs of industry stakeholders.
The ideal candidate should possess a MS in civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, biological system engineering, or a related field. Exceptional BS-level candidates may also be considered. A good understanding of the attached growth bioprocesses (e.g. biofilms or bacterial granules) is preferred. Knowledge in mathematical modeling or biological nutrient removal is highly desirable. Experience in bioreactor design/operation or research paper/proposal writing is a plus. The selected candidate will receive a competitive stipend, full tuition, and benefits. There is also potential for collaboration with local industrial partners.
Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Wang directly at wzw@vt.edu with a curriculum vitae (including GPA, GRE and TOFEL scores, one-page summary of research experience/interest, the contact information of three references, and a full list of publications if applicable). Interested candidates can find more information about Dr. Wang’s research from the link (http://www.water.cee.vt.edu/). The expected start date is January 2016. The review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. |
