The fund is from Dr. Hubert P. H. Shum and Dr. Nauman Aslam under the gLink project and will support a Chinese PhD studying from a Chinese university to visit the Northumbria University in the UK for up to 27 months starting from early 2016 (the actual supported duration depends on mutual agreement and actual project start date). The PhD student will be supported with 1500 Euro per month + travel expenses. More information about the gLink project can be found here: https://glink‐edu.eu/general_information Project Overview Smart home is a popular research area nowadays due to its potential to enhance the quality of life. Applications such as human behaviour analysis and ergonomics monitoring can be automated, thereby improving well‐being of individuals with minimal running cost. The central problem of smart environments is to understand what the user is doing in order to provide the appropriate support. The focus of this research project is to propose new algorithms to accurately recognize and understand human behaviour based on a multi‐modal sensors such as color and depth video, body postures, etc. Machine learning and artificial intelligent algorithms will be adapted in order to identify the semantic meaning of the user activity from the input features. This project will be co‐supervised by Dr. Hubert P. H. Shum (https://info.hubertshum.com) and Dr. Nauman Aslam (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about‐us/our‐staff/a/nauman‐aslam) from Northumbria University. Successful applicant may utilize the Motion Capture and Virtual Reality Laboratory managed by Dr. Shum, which consists of more than £80,000 worth of equipment, including 3 sets of motion capture system (Xsens, OptiTrack), 3D scanners, depth cameras, 4K camcorders, as well as various virtual reality equipment such as head‐mounted displays and data gloves. Applicants should have some background knowledge on at least one of the following area: • Computer graphics • Computer vision • Artificial intelligent • Motion analysis Furthermore, experience on computer programming and application development will be considered. Application Procedure To apply, please send a full resume to Dr. Hubert P. H. Shum via email (hubert.shum@northumbria.ac.uk) by 22nd November 2015. In the resume, please detail the academic background, work experience (if any), English language qualification (if any), and publication/research project record (if any). Please also provide the contacts for two academic referees. We will perform a first round of selection on 22nd November, and contact the qualified candidates to submit a full application form within 1 week. For any query, please contact Dr. Hubert P. H.
