課題:Hierarchical carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites utilising graphene nanoflakes grown directly on carbon fibres for multifunctional applications Project Description: The superior strength and stiffness, corrosion resistance and fatigue performance of composites, over their metallic counterpart, is tempered by their low electrothermal conductivity and through-thickness strength. Researchers have proposed a myriad of approaches, utilising dispersed nanoparticles to overcome these disadvantages, with varying levels of success. This is particularly so in attempting to enhance strength/toughness, which are highly dependent on the level of dispersion, orientation and integrity of the nanoparticle/resin bond. Recent work has reported on growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto carbon fibres (Fig 1a) to act as ‘a(chǎn)nchors’ into the surrounding matrix, providing a more torturous path for crack propagation and thereby increasing fracture toughness. Moreover, their presence changes the electrothermal conductivity of the composite. To date, results have fallen short of projected improvements. In part, this is due to the high aspect ratio of CNTs which tend to become highly tangled and do not penetrate into the surrounding matrix to the extent that would be expected if the CNTs were more structurally stable. The high processing temperatures also induce defects in the carbon fibre. An alternative approach is to grow graphene nanoflakes onto the fibres. These are structurally stable and provide more effective penetration/anchoring into the resin. The aim of this work is to optimise the processing parameters for the production of these graphene nanoflake-enhanced fibres from which laminates can be produced for superior mutlifunctionality (e.g. increased fracture toughness, increased electrical conductivity for lightning strike protection and increased thermal conductivity for anti-icing applications).
