Firstly, the principle of two kinds of methods was presented. And then taking the simulated signal as example, the comparative study was carried on through the decomposition and reconstruction, instantaneous amplitude and frequency, time-frequency spectrum and marginal spectrum. Results showed that HHT and LMD decomposition have an adaptive features and the decomposed component can completely reconstruct the original signal. This feature provides conditions for de-noising. The time-frequency spectrums, coming from HHT and LMD, all have strong ability to express time-frequency characterization in details, which can be used to extract the time-frequency features of signal. The compared results indicated that LMD is superior to HHT in some respects, such as in boundary effect, iterative times and computational efficiency. And LMD avoids the phenomenon of false frequency, which often exists in HHT. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
