5 (five) CS PhD Positions at University of South Carolina

The Systems and Software Security Research Lab (https://cse.sc.edu/~zeng1/phd_position.html) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of South Carolina is recruiting students. We have 5 (five) PhD positions starting in Fall 2020. The research of our lab is focused on designing and building more secure computer systems, especially mobile systems and IoT devices. We also work on security issues of machine learning and apply machine learning to resolving security problems. The PhD students will be fully funded with competitive assistantship. Requirements for students: excellent coding skills and passion in research; GPA >= 3.2/4 (or top 20% in the class); Toefl >= 80 (or IELTS >= 6.5); GRE Q>=165 V>=150 (we can slightly lower the requirements on GRE and GPA if you are distinguished in other aspects, such as coding and research). Research in this area typically involves very little maths and theory, but requires high coding, innovation and system building skills and it needs you to work very hard to succeed. Dr. Qiang Zeng's homepage: https://cse.sc.edu/~zeng1/ Dr. Lannan Luo's homepage: https://cse.sc.edu/~lluo/ 為什么要申請(qǐng)南卡大學(xué)？ 研究：南卡大學(xué)屬于卡內(nèi)基分類中的R1大學(xué), 其CS排名在全美排第82 (checked on Nov 3. 2019)。 注意csrankings由于其客觀性，現(xiàn)在越來(lái)越被廣泛認(rèn)可。我們組(Dr. Qiang Zeng and Dr. Lannan Luo's group)的研究都是學(xué)科最前沿的問(wèn)題，非常有利于學(xué)生發(fā)高水平的論文。學(xué)生從PhD第一學(xué)期就有屬于自己的project，而不是做工程性的coding或者給其他學(xué)生打下手，我們組的學(xué)生因此成長(zhǎng)迅速。我們把比較多的精力和指導(dǎo)投入到學(xué)生身上，因材施教幫助學(xué)生找到合適的問(wèn)題，大量的時(shí)間和學(xué)生一起討論解決方案，甚至一起debug。我們組的選題都是既有趣，而且又關(guān)注最重要的研究問(wèn)題，包括Internet of Things, UAV, NLP-inspired binary code analysis。 在過(guò)去的一學(xué)年，雖然我們組只有三個(gè)學(xué)生，但已經(jīng)成績(jī)斐然。共發(fā)表了兩篇A類會(huì)議文章(NDSS'19, MobiCom'19), 兩篇A類期刊(TDSC, TMC), 三篇B類會(huì)議文章(DSNx2, RAID)。我們的NDSS工作是第一個(gè)將基于深度學(xué)習(xí)的NLP技術(shù)引入binary code analysis，已經(jīng)引來(lái)廣泛關(guān)注。我們的MobiCom工作是第一個(gè)為千差萬(wàn)別的IoT設(shè)備提供統(tǒng)一、安全、易用的user authentication solution。我們組研究經(jīng)費(fèi)充足，所以今年準(zhǔn)備招5名PhD學(xué)生。我們熱切期望確實(shí)對(duì)安全研究有熱情的學(xué)生加入我們，作出更有意思、影響力更大的工作。 治安：南卡大學(xué)位于南卡的首府哥倫比亞市。如果僅根據(jù)網(wǎng)上數(shù)據(jù)，許多人誤以為哥市治安差。這其實(shí)是一個(gè)非常大的誤解。南卡大學(xué)與州政府僅僅一街之隔，所在地區(qū)整潔漂亮，而且治安非常好。哥市確有一個(gè)不安全的區(qū)域，但離學(xué)校有幾十公里，對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)和生活其實(shí)沒(méi)有任何影響。 氣候與生活：南卡的氣候可能是全美最好的地區(qū)之一，四季分明，除了夏天會(huì)有兩個(gè)月比較熱，其他季節(jié)非常舒適，大部分時(shí)間陽(yáng)光明媚。這里距離大海只有一個(gè)半小時(shí)車程，市郊有大湖，市內(nèi)有河流。是一個(gè)景色宜人、干凈舒適的城市。不但自然環(huán)境優(yōu)美，而且因?yàn)槭侵莸氖赘�，這里生活也很便利，動(dòng)物園，植物園，Costco, Walmart, Macy's, Bestbuy, 還有各種中西口味的飯店，兩家中國(guó)超市。對(duì)學(xué)生免費(fèi)的、世界水平的健身館就在我們系樓旁邊。 畢業(yè)與就業(yè)：我們實(shí)驗(yàn)室的兩大方向就是Systems and Software Security和Deep Learning (但請(qǐng)注意，我們只關(guān)注與安全有關(guān)的問(wèn)題)。而這兩個(gè)方向正是在中、美兩國(guó)市場(chǎng)需求最大的兩個(gè)方向。畢業(yè)的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)我們非常清晰，學(xué)生只需要在top-tier conferences上發(fā)表兩篇文章，就可以畢業(yè)。 |
