1.Rankine lecture The Rankine Lecture is hosted in March each year by the British Geotechnical Association. It is widely viewed as the most prestigious of the invited lectures in Geotechnics. The lecture commemorates W. J. M. Rankine, Professor of Civil Engineering at Glasgow University, who was one of the first engineers in the UK to make a significant contribution to Soil Mechanics, and is best known for his theory for the earth pressure on retaining walls. From 1961 to 1972 the lecture was held at the Institution of Civil Engineers, but since 1973 has taken place at Imperial College. In even-numbered years the lecturer is from the UK, and in odd-numbered years from overseas. Each lecture is published in Géotechnique, together with the text of the biographical introduction and the vote of thanks. List of Rankine Lecturers No YEAR LECTURER SUBJECT 1 1961 A. 7. Peck Lecture Prof. Ralph B. Peck was born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1912. He grew up in Denver, where his father was Engineer of Structures for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. He received the degrees of Civil Engineer and Doctor of Civil Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1934 and 1937 with the intention of becoming a structural engineer. After eight months as a structural detailer with the American Bridge Company, he attended the Soils Mechanics classes of Professor Author Casagrande at Harvard until 1939. At this time Dr. Karl Terzaghi became a consultant to the City of Chicago for the design and construction of the Initial System of Chicago Subways and Peck became his representative on the job. He was in charge of soil testing and field observations until the work was closed down during World War II, when he became Chief Engineer of Testing on the construction of an ordnance plant in Marion, Ohio. In December 1942 he joined the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois at Urbana, from which he retired in June, 1974, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Professor Peck's main interest has been observation of the behavior of earth and rock during construction and under stress. He has been equally concerned with the organization and presentation of new knowledge in this field in a form useful to the practicing engineer. He is the co-author of two books, one with Karl Terzaghi, "Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice", now in its third edition with G. Mesri, and one with Walter E. Hanson and Thomas H. Thornburn, "Foundation Engineering". Both are directed to the needs of the designer and constructor. He is the author of over 200 technical papers, some of which have been included in the book, "Judgment in Geotechnical Engineering - The Professional Legacy of Ralph B. Peck", which appeared in 1984 and "Ralph B. Peck: Educator and Engineer - The Essence of the Man", published in 2006. He has been a consultant on foundations for buildings, ore docks and other heavily loaded structures; on tunnels and open cuts for the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, the Washington Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit Authority in Washington, D.C., the New York Second Avenue Subway, the Baltimore Rapid Transit System, and the Los Angeles Metro; and on dams including Mica Dam, Bennett Dam, and the Churchill Falls and James Bay Hydroelectric projects. He was President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from 1969 to 1973; has been the recipient of the Norman Medal, the Wellington Prize, the Karl Terzaghi Award, and the President's Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers; the 1972 National Society of Professional Engineers' Award; the 1973 Moles Non-Member Award; the 1983 Golden Beaver Award; the 1976 Washington Award; the 1988 John Fritz Award; and the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal of the U.S. Army. In May, 1974, he received the honorary degree of D. Eng. from his Alma Mater, and in 1987 the honorary degree of D.Sc. from Laval University. In 1975 he received the U.S. National Medal of Science from President Ford. In 1999, he was elected to the Rensselaer Hall of Fame, and in 2000 was selected as the first hero of the Geo-Institute of ASCE. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In 1937 he married Marjorie Elizabeth Truby, who died in 1996. They have two children, Mrs. Nancy Jeanne Young and Dr. James Leroy Peck, and two grandchildren. |

3. Bjerrum Lecture 紀(jì)念NGI創(chuàng)始人Prof.Laurits Bjerrum. Laurits Bjerrum was born in FarsB, Denmark on 6 August, 1918, the son of Chresten Bjerrum, a Danish surgeon. He graduated in Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Copenhagen in 1941. For the next six years he was employed by Dr Christen Ostenfeld, a consulting engineer practising in Copenhagen. It was appropriate that even at this early stage he should be head of the soil mechanics and foundation engineering group. During the early part of these six years he also worked in the Laboratory for Harbour Work and fundations, in the Technical University. In 1947 Laurits Bjerrum left Denmark and joined the staff of the Soil Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His research for the thesis: ‘Theoretical and experimental investigations on the shear strength of soils’, for which he was awarded a doctorate in 1952, marked the start of a lifelong interest in this fundamental topic, culminating in a remarkable state-of-the-art report on soft clay which he was to have given at the 8th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in Moscow in 1973. In 1951 Dr Bjerrum came to Norway to assume leadership of the newly established Norwegian Geotechnical Institute-a position which he held until his death. During his lifetime the memberships, honours and awards conferred on him were many and international. Among the honours he received were membership of both the Danish and Norwegian Academies of Technical Science, and the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, and an honorary membership of the Norwegian Geotechnical Society. The degree of Doctor of Science was conferred on him honoris caum by Loyola College in Baltimore in 1965, and in 1966 he received the Sam Eyde Prize for outstanding Civil Engineering work in Norway. In 1971 he received the Karl Terzaghi Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
