The work concerns the design of a "steel with an impossible combination of properties", where the alloy must have a strength in excess of 2000 MPa, resistance to sudden distributed-loads, a specified level of toughness and must be weldable so that the material can be implemented in large structures. Candidates should have a PhD and be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of solid-state phase transformations in steels, some knowledge of mathematical modelling techniques and computer literacy, together with familiarity with standard charcterisation techniques including transmission electron microscopy. Candidates are expected to take significant responsibility for the research, to work within the environment of a large research group and to communicate with and manage relationships with research partners.
