| Since we found a significant change in growth of suspension cells (Fig. 3). The cell number was in a lower level before 4 h, but then rapidly raised with high budding rate and low mortality rate. When fermented for 16 h, the cell number achieved a maximum value of about ? million/mL, which was closed to industrial level. However, increased ethanol exhibited a strong inhibition on yeast cells in the later period of fermentation, which led to a low budding rate and high mortality rate, thereby showing a decreased tendency in cell number. In addition, after 11 batches, a layer of enriched cells was observed in some place of carrier surface with the naked eye, which was not in consistent with Choi et al. who reported that it was difficult to accumulate cells through repeated batch processes. This result indicated that cell immobilization can promote cell growth and not seriously affected by sludge and suspended solid in the cassava meal medium. |

But, subsequently, the number raises rapidly due to the high budding rate and low mortality rate. However, this is not a real ending. As time goes futher, the number trends to decrease because of the increase of ethanol. In addition, after 11 batches, a layer of enriched cells is visible in some place of carrier surface. This is not in consistent with the results of Choi et al. [] which suggest(show, reveal, indicate) that it was difficult to accumulate cells through repeated batch processes. Our results suggest that cell immobilization can promote cell growth. The results also indicate that the cell growth is not seriously affected by sludge and suspended solid in the cassava meal medium. |
