Although such studies are valid to master the microstructure, the restrained expansion could act as a strengthening mechanism by partially filling the castable porosity, changing the castable’s properties. Therefore, the best results attained under lab conditions could differ from those attained in practice. A suitable example is the corrosion resistance evaluation of the steel ladle refractory lining, which is constantly exposed to the aggressive chemical attack of basic slag from the refining process. Due to its direct relationship with the castable’s porosity and average pore size5, besides the chemical issues, the material’s corrosion level depends on whether the castable is surrounded by a physical barrier or not. |
