As for the RGD-modified film, the surface RGD peptides could be specifically recognized by integrin receptors on cell membranes, and thus cells could be anchored to the surface through a specific ligand-receptor binding. Therefore, the RGD-modified surface is more favorable to cells than the NH3 plasma-treated surface. Although the cell viability is similar on both surfaces, the cells with spindle-like morphology on the RGD-modified surface are in a better state than those on the NH3 plasma-treated surface, as shown in Figure 3b,d. The reason why the RGD-modified surface obtained by our modification procedure does not show a distinct advantage over the NH3 plasma-treated surface in terms of promoting cell proliferation is due to the existence of PEG chains, which could resist protein adsorption and cell adhesion. This partially screens the ability of RGD-modified surfaces for promoting cell adhesion and proliferation. |
